Horse selection

Bottlelegger makes choosing wines for your season an easier process. This Horse wine selection will compliment many equestrian events that occur in the year and is customized and made for people who love horses. We searched through hundreds of bottles to narrow down a wine selection for you. Below are wines selected for you by your personal sommelier wine professional.

One among many reasons horse lovers and horses make Virginia home is because of the state's raw pasture land used for growing hay along with space for riding. It's common to drive along Route 50 between Loudoun and Fauquier Counties through the heart of Virginia's hunt club to see charming towns where the local economy centers on all things equestrian. People riding horses in a distant field is a common scene through much of Virginia, and it's a wonderful thing. Enjoy this selection tailored to horse lovers and equestrian events.

Black's station, Chardonnay, 2016 (Napa Valley, California)

Due east of Napa, tucked away in northern California’s rolling Dunnigan Hills, is a little town called Zamora. Back in the late 1800’s, folks used to call it Black’s Station. At its height, this hub founded by J.J. Black boasted a hotel, two stores, a jail, blacksmith shops and a town hall. Today we grow our grapes in Zamora and we’d like to think that the wines carry with them the character and frontier-style of the old town.

Black’s Station wines celebrate the virtues of Yolo County: homegrown fruit farmed with careful attention to quality and an eye to value. Black’s Station sticks to the classics, Chardonnay and Bordeaux varietals, grown in our vineyards and made to showcase the spirit of our region.

Black's Station Chardonnay with tree-fruits and citrus flavors rounded by pleasing minerality was chosen to raise a glass to horses and horse lovers in Virginia and in the world.

Wild Horse Winery, Grenache, syrah, mourvedre (Central Coast, CA)

This blend was very fun to make. Grenache and Mourvèdre both bring softness, red fruit, and spice, while the Syrah brings structure, color, and high-tone dark fruit. Aromatics are reminiscent of blueberry pie, with intense dark fruit, and subtle hints of vanilla and brown sugar. Blueberry, coupled with notes of ripe plum and vanilla, transfers to the palate and is carried through to the finish with soft tannins.

francis-ford-coppola-director-s-merlot-sonoma-county-usa-10319744.jpg

Francis Ford Coppola, Director's Merlot, 2014 (Sonoma County, CA)

Director’s Merlot is made primarily from Clones 3 and 9, selections that become intensely fruity as they ripen on the vine. Clone 3 grapes contribute traditional plum flavors and lushness while Clone 9 is dense, deeply colored, and more tannic. When we blend these Merlot selections together, we create a perfectly balanced wine, expressive on the palate and long on the finish.

The 2014 Director’s Merlot offers lushness and a round, full palate. Its fragrance demonstrates red and black fruit with hints of anise and spiced wood. Juicy upon entry, the wine broadens and becomes velvety on the palate with flavors of plum, loganberry and black cherry accentuated by subtle spice notes of espresso bean and toasted vanilla. Medium tannins support the body of this wine, offering sophistication in its finish. Pairs nicely with brisket, grilled pork chops and linguine with pesto.
